City of Burien opens application portal for second round of small business grants

By Hannah Sutherland

The City of Burien has opened the application portal for its second round of economic recovery grants for small businesses. In a Tuesday night email, the city announced the opportunity for up to 35 businesses to receive grants of $5,000.

The federal government funds the grants as part of the American Rescue Plan Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in March of 2021. The program is known locally in Burien as the “Small Business Economic Recovery Grants Program.”

“Small business grants help mitigate potential job losses, business closures, decline in sales tax revenue, and loss of goods and services to the community caused by enduring economic impacts of the pandemic,” according to the City of Burien’s website.

Businesses must meet all the criteria listed on the city’s website in order to be eligible for these grants. Non-profits, franchises and national chains are some of the types of businesses considered ineligible for the grant.

The first grant round was distributed between August and September of this year. The application portal to apply for this second round of grants is now open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, and the grants will be dispersed in December, 2023. The application is also available in Spanish.
