Highline School Board Summary: 9/7/2022  

Roll Call:  – 3  Directors & Superintendent were present,  Director Howell had an excused absence, and Director Garcia participated remotely

Scheduled Communications:

Superintendent’s Update:

  • Introduction of New Building Administrators
  • Dr. Jennifer Reinig – First Day of School Activities
    • Thanked school administrators, classroom teachers, educators and staff for the hard work and preparation
    • She highlighted several back-to-school activities
  • Sandy Hunt – President of Highline Education Association
    • Thanked district for getting the contract done early
    • Commented on Seattle teachers’ strike
      • One unresolved issue is inclusive education

School Board Reports:

  • Legislative – None
  • Director Hagos
    • Reported on being in the classrooms all day with the students K – 8
    • Visited all schools in District 5 prior to school opening
      • Witnessed the hard work of school staff and leadership teams to prepare for the kids returning – in awe about intentionality around improving academic efforts from last year
      • Recognized Savita Jones, Assistant Director of College and Career Readiness for her hard work
  • Director Alvarez
    • First Day of School at Cascade Middle School where grandson attends
      • Grandson said “6th grade is the best”
      • Thankful to be in Highline
  • Director Garcia
    • Nothing to report
  • Director Van
    • Thanked staff behind the scenes said “you know our students by name, strength and need”
      • Nutritional services at Raisbeck with Lisa Johnson
      • Safety and Security Team with Jeremy and staff
      • Bus Drivers – “you are the first and often the last to see our students”
    • Foundation Update
      • Brat Trot  October 1st
      • Brand New Event – Winter Warm Up event – Auction in November (more news coming later)
    • Directors are all having regional Meetings this fall
      • Opportunity to speak to the Directors, Dr. Duran and staff in an informal setting

Consent Agenda:    (Unanimously Approved)

The Following Action Items Moved to Consent Agenda – All Items Approved Unanimously. 
8.1. Motion to approve Student Health Policies: Adopting New Policy 3411 and Revising Policies 3413 and 3416
Approval of this motion would adopt Policy No. 3411 and revise Policies 3413 and   3416, as attached to the Board Action Report

8.2. Motion to approve Utilizing a Farm to School Purchasing Grant in the 2022-23 school year
Approval of this motion would approve the Farm to School Purchasing Grant in the amount of $320,000.

8.3. Motion to approve 2016 Bond – Fund Reallocation and Project Closeout  
Approval of this motion would approve the 2016 Bond Fund Reallocation and Project Closeout.

8.4. Motion to approve Evergreen High School Design Project – Approval of       Contract Amendment No. 1 and Increase of Purchase Order P201331 –       Bassetti Architects – Architectural and Engineering
Approval of this motion would approve the Contract Amendment No. 1 and increase
Purchase Order P201331 with Bassetti Architects for $3,190,482 to continue the design of Evergreen High School.

8.5. Motion to approve Tyee High School Design Project – Approval of Contract       Amendment No. 1 and Increasing Purchase Order P201436 – Integrus       Architecture – Architectural and Engineering Services
Approval of this motion would approve Contract Amendment No. 1 and increase Purchase Order P201436 with Integrus Architecture by $3,515,433 to continue the design of Tyee High School.

8.6. Motion to approve School-Based Mental Health Contract with Seneca Family         of Agencies
Approval of this motion would approve Seneca Family of Agencies as the recipient
of $300,000 to provide school-based mental health services.

8.7. Motion to approve Extended Agreement between WhiteWater Aquatics                     Management and Highline School District No. 401 regarding the operation of the Evergreen Pool to support Department of Commerce Grant.
(Revised since  introduction) Approval of this motion would approve the amendment to the agreement between WhiteWater Aquatics Management and Highline School District
No. 401 regarding the operation of the Evergreen Pool.

Introduction and Action Items: None

Motion to Move Introduction item 10.1 to the next meeting (no discussion)

10.1. Motion to approve 2022-2023 Copiers Northwest Contract Year 2 out of 5
Approval of this motion would approve the contract with Copiers Northwest for the
2022-23 school year
